A fine quality 19th century auctioneer or chairman's gavel beautifully turned from solid lignum vitae wood of characteristic contrasting markings, now of a lovely patinated colour. The double ended rapper is raised on a long, turned handle by means of a screw thread. A delightful piece remaining in well used but excellent original condition. Circa 1820-40.
