Georgian Candle Box in Mahogany

Price: SOLD
Ref: 10377

A characterful, late 18th century candle box of decorative, tapering form crafted from mahogany of the most glorious figure and colour, now with a lovely rich patina.  The shaped backboard with simple, pierced, foliate motif supports a chamfered, hinged lid which opens to reveal a large compartment for the storage of candles.  The front of the box is inlaid with a subtle boxwood string delineation and is centred by a charming heart motif, indicating that the piece may have been intended as a marriage gift.  A lovely, small furnishing accessory which would have hung by the side of a large fireplace or at the foot of the stairs in a fine Georgian house.  Despite a small area of damage to the top of the backboard, the piece remains in otherwise fine condition and is still practical for use today.  Circa 1780-1800.

H: 38cm (15.0")   W: 19cm (7.5")   D: 13cm (5.1")
