Ethiopian Decorated Food Bowl

Price: SOLD
Ref: 10298

Probably dating from the first half of the 20th century, an attractive and still practical item of Ethiopian domestic ware - a bowl of useful large size carved from a solid piece of wood decorated to the rim with naive incised geometric decoration and to the underside with a cross.  Such bowls were employed for a variety of utilitarian purposes such as food preparation, storage and serving but were considered a precious object to be respected and cared for, repaired if damaged and handed down as a family heirloom or gifted as part of a dowry.  This example has been drilled through at the edge to enable a piece of fabric to be threaded through for hanging and ease of carrying. There is a small piece missing from the rim and a crack to the edge but it is difficult to convey in words and photographs how much intrinsic character the piece has. The wood, through constant use and handling has developed the most extraordinary silky soft texture and exceptional patina, showing well how essential these treasured items were to the original owner. A wonderful bowl to delight the most discerning collector.
