Of exceptional quality and condition, a superb example of this highly sought furnishing accessory - a Victorian period bookslide crafted from wood, raised on an integral, canted, ebonised base and faced with selected veneers of burr walnut of rich colour and wonderful figure. Both ends of lancet form are adorned with Gothic brass ornament and may be extended from the centre by means of the pierced finger grip handle to hold further books as required. The central panel is fitted with a small brass plaque which reads, `Lockwood, Bond St.` who, based at 52 and 75 Bond Street were both makers and retailers of high quality luxury goods. A truly desirable piece to delight the most discerning collector and bibliophile. Circa 1870.
